GAR Memorial Oakwood Cemetery
This monument had been in poor condition but was repaired in 2016. It is about 12 feet high. The only inscriptions are “G.A.R.” and “Memorial.” The monument was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1916 by the GAR Stanfield Post #359. In 2016 a wonderful chain saw carving of a Civil War Soldier by artist Dave Bussard was placed by the monument. See photos of the restored monument, the carving and the old photo at the dedication with many Civil War Veterans. Also, photos from the re-dedication of the monument on June 4, 2016. The cemetery is south of Casey – turn east on E Hayes Drive (also called 105th Street) and follow it to Oakwood cemetery. Take the second entrance into the cemetery and the monument is visible from the entrance. The town of Casey is in Guthrie County but this cemetery is actually over the line in Adair County. Thank you to Dan Rittel for information and photos.
