State Capital Ceiling - GAR Medal
To commemorate an encampment in 1922, a GAR Medal was painted on the ceiling of the Iowa State Capital. This was restored and repainted in 1998. This is a spectacular view with the medal on a background of blue sky and clouds 275 feet high. There are also plaques of the Gettysburg Address and General John Logan's Memorial Day order of May 5, 1868 around the Capital Rotunda. In past years, Civil War battle flags from Iowa Regiments were shown in the Capital; however, these have been removed for restoration. Currently there is only one flag on display. The intent is to rotate flags that have been restored. These photos were taken 5/28/08 and 12/17/11.
