Aspen Grove Cemetery
There are a number of historical items of interest in Burlington’s Aspen Grove Cemetery. There is an impressive mausoleum/chapel for General John Corse, the commander at Allatoona Pass. It is said to be in poor condition on the interior and seldom open to the public. A memorial to General Karl Matthies is close-by. Matthies, born in Germany, commanded the 5th Iowa Infantry Regiment and was later promoted to brigade command. In the GAR section is a soldier monument about 25 feet high. Close to the monument is a cannon, a 6 pounder bronze field gun, M1841. It is painted silver and needs to be repainted. There is another similar cannon in storage. When this cannon was out, it was in Veterans Gardens – not the GAR section. The cemetery is in the northern part of town. It is best to enter on Corse Street from the east. The Corse Mausoleum is straight ahead and the GAR section is to the right. Photos taken 12/29/07 and 3/17/09. The GPS coordinates are set on the soldier monument.
