Civil War Soldier and Spanish Cannon
This is a large impressive monument in great condition on the courthouse square in Denison. It is 34 feet high and erected in 1917. The bronze cannon in the lower left has Spanish inscriptions and is dated 1795. The inscription reads, "N.3853.Sevilla.14.DeAgosto.D.E.1795." It is about 8 1/2 feet in length and has a 4 1/2 inch bore diameter. It is believed that it was captured in the Spanish-American War. Crawford County had a unit that went to the Philippines in this war. The monument is located at Broadway and Ave. C just west of the business district. Photos taken 4/29/08 with the exception of the one from the back of the monument which was taken 5/9/18. Included is a copy of an old undated postcard from Danny Krock.
