Monument for Iowa 4th, 9th, 26th, and 30th Infantry Regiments
The Iowa 4th, 9th, 26th and 30th were part of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 15th Corps. They participated in the assaults on May 19 and again on May 22, 1863 and suffered heavy casualties. These assaults against strong Confederate fortifications were unsuccessful and General Grant changed his strategy and began a seige of the city.
