Medal of Honor Recipient Pvt. William Campbell
William Campbell (1840-1919) was in the 30th Ohio Infantry and was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism at Vicksburg during the attack on Confederate positions on May 22, 1863. After the war, he lived in Polk County, Iowa and is buried in Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines. Glendale is on University Avenue between 48th and 55th. The gravestone is in block 15, lot 58 in the cemetery. It is across the road and SE of the Civil War cannons and flag pole. Look for the larger family stone marked "Campbell" of pinkish granite.
