Medal of Honor Recipient Joseph Stickels
Sgt. Joseph Stickels (1843-1876) was a member of the Ohio 83rd Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for capturing a flag of a Missouri Brigade on April 9, 1865 at Ft. Blakely, Alabama - the last infantry battle of the Civil War. Sgt. Stickels moved to a farm near Monroe after the war. He suffered from tuberculosis and died in 1876. He is buried in the Silent City Cemetery on the SW corner of Monroe. He is in block 2, lot 56 of the cemetery - take the 2nd entrance and his marker is on the right. Look for the light colored stone.
