Medal of Honor Recipient Charles Swan
Pvt. Charles Swan (1838-1914) was awarded the Medal of Honor for capturing the enemy flag at Selma, Alabama on April 2, 1865. Federal Cavalry forces defeated units under Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest in this battle. Later, Charles Swan was promoted to Sergeant. After the war he moved to several places in the West but returned to his original home town of Mt. Pleasant before his death. He is buried in the Forest Home Cemetery. Take Walnut Street south off Washington Street/Highway 34. The monument is at the top of the hill in the SW portion of the cemetery. It is difficult to locate from the road - it is near an obelisk with pink stone. Photos taken 11/26/08.
