Medal of Honor Recipient Andrew J. Sloan
Pvt. Sloan (1835-1875) of the 12th Iowa Infantry Regiment was awarded the Medal of Honor for capturing a flag during the Battle of Nashville on December 16, 1864. Following the battle, Sloan and others from his unit went to Washington D. C. and presented the captured flag to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. He farmed near Colesburg both before and after the war. He was accidentally killed when he fell from a tree in 1875. Pvt. Sloan is buried in Platt Cemetery located on the north side of Highway 3 about halfway between Colesburg and Luxemburg. This is a very small country cemetery - Sloan is buried near the flagpole. There are 4 other members of Co. H, 12th Iowa Infantry buried next to Pvt. Sloan. Photo taken 2/25/09.
