Medal of Honor Recipient George Washington Healey
Corporal Healey (1842-1913) of the 5th Iowa Cavalry earned the Medal of Honor for capturing Confederate prisoners at Newnan, Georgia on July 29, 1864. Earlier he had been wounded in the head and lost the sight in his left eye. Later he was captured and sent to Andersonville Prison. After the war he operated a hardware store in Dubuque. Linwood Cemetery is off Windsor Avenue in the north central part of the city. From downtown take White Street north to E22nd St - then east to Windsor Avenue - then north to the cemetery. The stone and plaque are located east of the GAR section with the CW monument - look for the Healey family stone with the urn on top. The name on the plaque is misspelled. Photos taken 2/25/09.
