Medal of Honor Recipient James Hill
Lt. James Hill (1822-1899), of the 21st Iowa Infantry Regiment, was awarded the Medal of Honor for action at the Battle of Champion Hill, Mississippi on May 16, 1863. He was in a difficult spot, but using quick thinking and ingenuity, was able to capture Confederate prisoners. Later he became Chaplin of the Regiment. He was born in England but came to Iowa and farmed and became a Baptist minister in the Cascade region. After the war he continued his ministry and became president of a narrow gauge railroad. The Cascade Protestant Cemetery is on the west side of town. Take McKinley Street north along the cemetery - the Hill stone is in the first row off the street just before the second entrance.
