Medal of Honor Recipient Luman L. Cadwell
Sgt. Cadwell (1836-1925) was a member of the 2nd New York Cavalry. On September 20, 1864, he swam across a 150 foot bayou in Louisiana to take a flatboat that was then used to transport soldiers across the bayou to capture a Confederate camp on the opposite side. After the war, he was a railroad conducter and later lived in Iowa and entered the banking business. He is buried in Phelps Cemetery on the south side of Decorah. It is difficult to reach - from downtown, take Washington Street to Ravine Street to Pleasant Avenue to the cemetery. After going through the entrance - the stone is located to the left near the top of the hill. Photos taken 3/27/09.
