Civil War Memorial
This monument was erected by the WRC. The inscription reads,"In memory of our noble dead of 1861-1865 who are buried in unknown graves." This is located at West Lawn Cemetery (also called Merle Hay Cemetery) in Glidden. Merle Hay, a native of Glidden, was the first Iowan and one of the first three USA soldiers who died in World War I on November 3, 1917 in France. The final two photos are from a monument dedicated to Merle Hay. In 2009 an attractive veterans monument was erected with a section showing Civil War soldiers from the region. The cemetery is located NW of Glidden on Highway 30. The monument is on the west road in the cemetery. Thank you to Steve Hanken for the notification of these monuments. The photo of the veterans monument was taken 5/3/14. The other photos were taken 5/9/18.
