Medal of Honor Recipient Richard Cosgriff
Private Richard Cosgriff (1845-1910) was a member of the 4th Iowa Cavalry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action in capturing the enemy flag and its bearer at a bridge over the Chattahoochee River in Columbus, Georgia on April 16, 1865. He was born in Ireland but his family moved to Wisconsin and it is said that he rafted down the Mississippi River to join the 4th Iowa Cavalry. After the war he returned to Wisconsin and farmed and had other business ventures. He is buried in the Hope Cemetery in the central part of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin - take State Avenue north off E Grand Avenue. Take the north road in the cemtery and the headstone is on the north side of the road at the start of section 2. Photos taken 7/10/09.
