Civil War Monument at Hickory Grove Cemetery
This is a 12 foot monument with the names of 17 fallen soldiers inscribed around the base. The inscription reads, "Erected June 1870 by the Soldiers and Citizens of Marion Town Ship in Memory of their Fallen Brothers." The design of the monument is similar to other very old ones at Kossuth, Winfield and Keosauqua. The stone likely was from a limestone quarry in the area. Hickory Grove Cemetery is located several miles north of Mt. Pleasant off Hwy. 218/27 on 185th Street. The monument is on the south edge of this small country cemetery. Thank you to Pat Ryan White for notification of this monument. Photos taken 9/1/20.
