Civil War Monument
This is a very old Civil War Monument in the Winfield Scott Township Cemetery. It would have been erected shortly after the end of the War. It honors 12 Civil War soldiers from the area who gave their lives for their country. There are three soldiers inscribed on each side of the monument. The design of the monument is similar to those in Kossuth, Keosauqua and near-by Hickory Grove Cemetery. The stone was likely from a limestone quarry in the area. The cemetery is on the SE side of town - take 130th Street. The monument is by the flags in the central portion of the cemetery. Thank you to Pat Ryan White for information about this monument. Photos taken 9/1/20.
