Last Soldier Jonas Hoffhines Memorial
Jonas Hoffhines (1840-1940) was the last Civil War Soldier of Decatur County. He lived to age 100. He was a member of Company C, 88th Ohio Infantry and served from August 24, 1862 until July 3, 1865. The SUVCW, Iowa Department, is recognizing the last soldier in each county and this plaque was installed at the gravesite in the Leon Cemetery on August 23, 2014. Mike Rowley, shown in photo with Barb Stineman, led the ceremony to honor Jonas Hoffhines. The Leon Cemetery is on the west side of town - off NW 6th Street. The gravesite is in the west central section of the Cemetery. Photos taken 8/23/14.
