Last Soldier Chester Dickenson
Private Chester Dickenson (1845-1939) was the last living soldier of Union County. While he lived in Creston in Union County at the time of his death, he was buried in the Winterset City Cemetery in Madison County. This memorial is listed in both counties. Private Dickerson was a member of Company I, 6th Regiment, Michigan Heavy Artillery. He became a doctor in civilian life. On June 4, 2017, a plaque was placed at his tombstone by members of the SUVCW. The cemetery is in the SE part of town - follow S 4th Street to the entrance. The gravesite is hard to find in Section J of cemetery. It is near the Bales and Schwaner tombstones. Photos taken 6/4/17.
