Last Soldier Robert A. Millen
Private Robert Millen was the last living Civil War soldier of Marion County. He died January 4, 1947 just a few days short of his 100th birthday. He enlisted in Company A, 33rd Iowa Infantry Regiment on March 30, 1864 at age 17. He lived in Melcher but was buried in the Gosport Cemetery (the town of Gosport no longer exists). Also see the listing for the nearby Elm Tree Memorial Park where the plaque showing soldiers enlisting from the area includes Private Millen. Iowa SUVCW members placed a plaque and held a ceremony on June 4, 2017. It was led by Past Department Commander Danny Krock, shown in photo. Take Highway 14 south of Knoxville for about 7 1/2 miles, then turn west on the Melcher-Dallas road (G76), then turn south on 103rd Avenue to the cemetery. Follow the cemetery road and the large red granite family stone is easy to find next to the road. Photos taken 6/4/17.
