Last Soldier Washington Grimes
Private Washington Grimes (1845-1939) was the last living soldier of Calhoun County. His full name was Lewis Washington Grimes but was known as Washington Grimes. He was buried in Gowrie in Webster County. He served in Company D, 45th Iowa Infantry Regiment. Roy Linn placed a Last Soldier marker on June 6, 2019. Thanks to Roy for providing the photos and information. The location is in Gowrie Township Cemetery on West Main Street. An obituary is also included.
