Last Soldier Elliott P. Taylor
Private Elliott Taylor (1845-1944) was the last living soldier of Jasper County. He was buried in Jefferson County but is listed under both counties. He enlisted in Company M, 4th Iowa Cavalry in November, 1861 at age 15. He re-enlisted in 1863 and was mustered out in August, 1865. He would have seen much action in Missouri, Arkansas, around Vicksburg and in Alabama and Georgia later in the War. He served as Commander of the George Strong GAR Post #19 in Fairfield and as GAR State Commander in 1942-3. Thanks to Danny Krock for placing the Last Soldier marker and providing the photo. Private Taylor is buried in Plot 97, Lot 4 in the Glasgow Cemetery. The Cemetery is located southwest of the small town of Glasgow.
