Last Soldier John Avery
Private John Avery (1848-1944) was the last living soldier of Clinton County, Iowa. He is buried nearby in Sharon Cemetery in Spring Hill, Illinois. This memorial is listed in both Clinton County and Illinois. He served in Company B, 140th Illinois Infantry. In his obituary, it stated that he was the last soldier of Eastern Iowa, not just Clinton County. The cemetery is on Spring Hill Road or Highway 3 - the gravesite is located in Row 3, Lot 59B.
