Sac County - Sac City
Civil War Soldier
This is a bronze soldier with a granite base. The height is 20 feet. It is in a nice setting in Monumental Square, a small city park just across the street from the Courthouse. There are 20 names of soldiers from Sac County inscribed on three sides of the monument - one of these is shown below. It was built at a cost of $3472 and dedicated November 21, 1894. There are four 105mm Howitzers M3A around the monument - these are WWII cannons. Originally there were CW cannons - see the old postcard. They no doubt were scrapped during WWII and later replaced with the WWII howitzers. It is located just east of the business district on Highway 20. Also see the separate listing for the GAR Hall just west of the monument. Photos of the monument were taken 9/22/21 - photos of the howitzers were taken 2/24/09. Thank you to Danny Krock and David Shedlock for providing copies of the old undated postcards.
