Medal of Honor Recipient Nicholas Bouquet
Sergeant Bouquet (1842-1912) of the 1st Iowa Infantry Regiment was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroic action at Wilson's Creek, Missouri on August 10, 1861. He prevented a loss of a cannon which had been disabled by capturing a rider less horse at large on the field of battle which he then hitched to the disabled gun to prevent its capture. Born in Germany, he came to Burlington as a young man and worked as a coppersmith, shopkeeper, policeman and restaurant owner. He was the father of 10 children. He is buried in Aspen Grove Cemetery in the northern section of Burlington - take Osborn Street to Corse Street to the entrance of the cemetery. The stone is near the SW corner of the cemetery next to the road. The photo was taken 3/17/09. It is believed the old photo was taken about 1905.
