Medal of Honor Recipient William B. Mayes
Private Mayes (1837-1900) was a member of Company K, 11th Iowa Infantry. His citation reads "With one companion and under a fierce fire from the enemy and at short range, went to the rescue of a wounded comrade who had fallen between the lines and carried him to a place of safety." This occurred at Kennesaw Mountain on Jume 15, 1864. Mayes moved from Ohio to De Witt, Clinton County, Iowa shortly before the War. After the War, not too much is known of him except that he worked as an attorney in Los Angeles in the last years of his life.

He is buried in the Angelus Rosedale Cemetery on 1831 W. Washington Blvd. in Los Angeles. The location is Section H, Lot 43, Grave 3 SW. The family stone can be observed on the right of the road - go about half-way between the entrance and the turnaround - the stone is several rows from the road. The office can also provide a good map to find it. Photo taken 2/5/11.
