W. T. Sherman GAR Hall
The Sac City GAR Hall was erected in 1892 and served as a meeting place for the GAR, WRC and SUVCW for many years. The GAR Post had changed their name to the W. T. Sherman Post #284 upon the death of General Sherman in 1891. Today the building still has the name "Gen. Sherman Post" across the gable of the building and two stone insets shown in the photos below. It is used as a Senior Citizens Center today. The interior has been remodeled and does not have anything from the old GAR Hall. The building is located just west of the statue of the CW soldier in Monumental Square - and across the street from the Courthouse. Also see the separate listing showing the monument of the CW Soldier. Thank you to Rebecca Conard for notification of this well preserved GAR Hall. Photos taken 10/14/11. Also included is an old undated postcard with a view of the statue in the background - thanks to Danny Krock for providing the copy of the postcard.
