Bremer County Courthouse Cannons
There were two large cannons on the courthouse grounds in Waverly that were scrapped for their metal during World War II. The exact number in the state is unknown but many Civil War cannons were taken for the benefit of the war effort. These appear to be Rodman cannons with a 10 inch bore diameter. Each weighs over 15,000 pounds. There is also a newspaper article with a similar situation in nearby Butler County where they also lost cannons at their courthouse in Allison. Thank you to Dr. Terrence Lindell of Wartburg College for providing this information. The photos are from the collection of the Bremer County Historical Society. The newspaper articles for the Bremer cannons are from the Waverly Democrat. The article on the Butler cannons is from the Waverly Journal.
