Last Soldier Robert Martin Memorial
Robert G. Martin, the last Civill War soldier of Greene County, was recognized on May 30, 2015 with a plaque placed at his gravesite. He was born August 25, 1849 and enlisted in the 188th Ohio Infantry Regiment at the age of 15. He died August 30, 1944 at age 95. The SUVCW, Iowa Department, has a project to identify and recognize all Last Soldiers from each of Iowa's 99 counties. Ron Rittel, shown in the second photo, has done a great deal of research to accomplish this. Members of the 49th Iowa Infantry are shown in the third photo. This grave is located in Junction Township Cemetery (also known as Grand Junction Cemetery). Take County Road E53 about one mile west of town. The gravesite is near the CW monument in the center of the cemetery. Photos taken 5/30/15.
