Last Soldier Amariah Chandler
Private Amariah Chandler (1837-1938) was the last living soldier of Hardin County. He served in Company H, 10th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. He enlisted in 1861 and was in several early battles of the Civil War in the East. According to his obituary, he received a bullet in his shoulder, which he carried to his death, at the Battle of Malvern Hill. Concussion from cannon fire burst both ear drums and destroyed his hearing - due to these injuries he was given a disability discharge. He was buried, at age 100, in the Alden Cemetery which is located on the NW side of town off 125th Street. Thanks to Danny Krock for placing the Last Soldier marker and providing photos. Also, thank you to Find-a-Grave for the old photo of Private Chandler.
